The Blue Discs on the Sand

They were called by-the-wind sailors — Velella velella, to use the proper name. They aren’t jellyfish, and they aren’t dangerous at all. Each little blue disc is actually a colony of tiny creatures living together as one, floating on the surface of the open ocean. That clear ridge we’d seen standing up on each one really is a sail — a small stiff fin that catches the wind and pushes the whole creature across the water. They spend their entire lives drifting wherever the breeze takes them.

The young woman explained that they travel in enormous groups, sometimes millions strong, far out at sea where we never see them. But every so often, the wind shifts and blows steadily toward land for days on end. When that happens, the whole fleet gets pushed helplessly onto the beach, all at the same time. That’s why they appear so suddenly and in such staggering numbers — it isn’t pollution or a spill or anything gone wrong. It’s simply the wind doing what the wind does.

As for the man who warned of a terrible sting — she gently set that worry to rest. By-the-wind sailors have only the mildest sting, far too weak to hurt a person through the skin of your hand. The most she suggested was to avoid rubbing your eyes after touching one, and to wash up afterward, same as you would after handling anything from the sea. The toddler’s mother, when I told her later, was so relieved she nearly cried.

What stayed with me most was learning what happens next. Once they’ve washed ashore, the little sailors dry out in the sun, their blue slowly fading to a clear, papery film until they look like tiny cellophane wrappers scattered on the sand. Within a few days, the beach we thought had been invaded looked perfectly ordinary again, as though the whole strange fleet had never come at all. The sea had simply shown us one of its quieter wonders and then tidied it away.

I’ve thought about those blue discs many times since. How a thing can look frightening only because it’s unfamiliar, and how a little curiosity — and asking someone who knows — can turn fear into pure wonder. Did you ever come across these on your own beach walks, or something just as mysterious? Tell me in the comments, I’d love to hear it. And please share this with a friend who loves the ocean’s little secrets. 💙
