I Sold the House My Kids Were Fighting Over

It was at Thanksgiving that I finally heard it plainly. My three grown children, at the far end of the table, discussing my house — their house, as they saw it — and who would do what with it ‘afterward.’

They weren’t cruel about it. That was almost the worst part. They talked about my death and my home the way you’d talk about dividing up a set of dishes. Practical. Settled. As if I were already a memory.

I sat there with my fork halfway to my mouth and I realized something. To my children, I had quietly become a house with a person still rattling around inside it.

I said nothing that night. But something had shifted in me for good. I had spent my whole life being the mother, the caretaker, the thing to be inherited. And I was only seventy-six. I was not done living.

The following month, without telling a soul, I put the house on the market. It sold in three weeks. And then I bought a small, cozy camper van and a road atlas.
