They Sat Me at the Kids’ Table at the Wedding (Continued)

I stood up, back at the children’s table, and I raised my glass. Every head in that room turned to find me, all the way in the back by the kitchen.

‘I’ve had the joy,’ I began, ‘of watching Danny grow from a boy who couldn’t tie his shoes into the fine man you see today. I love him more than I have words for, which is why, when he asked, I was so glad to help make this beautiful day happen.’

I let that sit for just a moment. I watched the bride’s mother, up at the head table, go a little pale.

‘Danny,’ I went on, warm as anything, ‘wherever you seat me, I will always be in your corner. A family isn’t a seating chart. It’s who shows up. And I will always, always show up for you.’ Then I wished them a long and happy life, and I sat back down with the children, who thought I was wonderful.

Danny found me before the cake was even cut, mortified, apologizing, moving me up to the family table himself. Turns out he’d never seen the seating chart — his in-laws had made it. I never had to say a single unkind word. Sometimes the classiest thing you can do is stand tall exactly where they tried to put you, and let the room notice.
