I Thought My Neighbor Was Ignoring Me for a Year

Eleanor moved into the little house next to mine right after she lost her husband. I brought over a casserole that first week, the way you do. She took it at the door with a tight nod and shut it before I could say much.

I tried everything. I waved from my garden. I left a Christmas card. I knocked to invite her for tea. Nothing. She’d hurry from her car to her door with her eyes down, never a word.

After a year of it, I gave up. I decided she was simply one of those cold, private people who wanted nothing to do with anybody, and I minded my own business.

Then came a hard cold snap in January. On the third bitter morning, I noticed her mail was jammed and overflowing in the box, days of it, and her curtains hadn’t moved.

Something turned over in my stomach. I walked across the frozen grass and I knocked, and knocked, and finally I pounded on that door and called her name as loud as I could.
