I Raised Her Alone, and at Graduation She Stopped (Continued)

She found me in that sea of people, pointed straight at me, and asked the announcer if she could say something.

With the whole auditorium listening, she said: ‘Before I take this diploma, I need everyone here to know who earned it with me. When I was four, I lost my mom, and a sixty-three-year-old man who had just lost his wife took me in when everyone told him not to.’

‘He learned to braid hair. He learned the school songs. He worked past the age he should have rested so I could have everything. Every good thing I am, I am because one old man refused to give up on a little girl. Papa — this is yours as much as mine.’

Then she walked down off that stage, before she even took her diploma, and she put her graduation cap on my bald old head, and she hugged me while two thousand strangers stood up and cried right along with me.

They told me an old man couldn’t raise a little girl. I’m here to tell you that love doesn’t check your age, or your tiredness, or what anyone says you can’t do. I gave that child everything I had. And at the end of it, she gave it all back in front of the whole world. I would do every hard day of it again.
