I Said No to My Son’s Inheritance Request (Continued)

The days since have been lonely. His sister has taken his side. My phone, which used to ring with grandchildren, has gone quiet. There are nights I’ve nearly picked it up and said, ‘Fine, take it,’ just to hear their voices again.

But then I remember the food truck, and the vending machines rusting in my son-in-law’s garage, and I make myself put the phone down.

I raised my children to stand on their own. Helping them chase a fourth failure with the money meant to keep me off their hands someday isn’t love. It’s fear dressed up as generosity, and I’ve spent too much of my life doing that.

I’d give Kevin my last dollar in a true emergency. But a business his wife will abandon by spring is not an emergency, and my old age is not a bank.

Still, I lie awake some nights and wonder if a better mother would have just said yes. So I’m asking honestly, from all of you who’ve raised grown children — was I wrong to protect my own future? Tell me the truth in the comments.
