I Stopped Babysitting After What She Said

When my daughter Michelle went back to work, I offered to watch her three little ones so she wouldn’t have to pay for daycare. Five days a week, from seven in the morning until six at night. For two years.

I did it out of love. Those children are the light of my life. I fed them, taught them their letters, kissed their scraped knees. I never asked for a penny, and I never wanted one.

Then one afternoon I came to drop off the little one’s forgotten blanket, and I heard Michelle on the porch, talking to a friend. She didn’t know I was there.

‘Oh, I don’t pay her,’ she laughed. ‘She’s basically free daycare. Honestly she’s lucky — it gives her something to do. She’s got to feel useful at her age, right?’

I stood on the side of that porch holding a child’s blanket, and something inside me went quiet and cold. The next morning, I told Michelle I could no longer watch the children full-time.
