The room went silent, and I have not had a peaceful night since.
Emily cried. Her mother called me bitter. Greg, to his credit, stayed quiet. Half the family has phoned to tell me I’m punishing my daughter and ruining her big day over my own wounded pride.
And maybe they’re right. That thought has kept me up every night. But here is what sits in my chest: I did not work two jobs for twenty years and give up every good thing for myself so that another man could take the one walk I dreamed of my whole life, while I fund it from a folding chair.
I told Emily I love her more than my own life, that I will always love her, and that I’ll be at her wedding with a full heart no matter what she decides. But I cannot open twenty years of savings to pay for the honor of watching someone else be her father for those thirty steps.
I don’t know if I’m standing on principle or just a heartbroken old fool who can’t let go. I truly don’t. So I’m asking people with more sense than me: was I wrong to say what I said? Tell me honestly in the comments.
