I gave my mother the last four years of her life, and I would do it again, but I won’t pretend it was easy. I moved into her house. I bathed her, managed her medicines, drove to every appointment, and held her hand through the nights she was frightened.
My brother Daniel lived two hours away and visited maybe twice a year. His wife, Vanessa, came even less. I never resented it out loud. Someone had to do the caring, and I was glad it could be me.
When Mom finally passed, we all gathered at the lawyer’s office for the reading of her will. I was hollowed out with grief and exhaustion, just wanting it to be over.

The room turned to look at me. Four years of the hardest, most loving work of my life, and this was the thanks. I opened my mouth but nothing came out. Then the lawyer cleared his throat and said, ‘Actually, your mother anticipated this. She left a letter, and she asked that I read it aloud to everyone before we go any further.’
