The Metal Circle in Our Counter

The moment it came up, it was obvious, and we all laughed at how long we’d puzzled over it. It’s one of those quietly brilliant modern touches that, once you’ve lived with one, you desperately want in your own kitchen. If you’ve never seen one pop up out of a counter before, the reveal is genuinely satisfying.

It rose about a foot out of the counter, turned once, and revealed itself: a pop-up power outlet. Three sockets and two USB ports, hidden inside the countertop, waiting there the whole time. Push it back down and it disappears completely — no cords, no wall clutter, just clean stone. The kids made it go up and down roughly four hundred times before bedtime.

It turns out they have been in high-end kitchens for years, and once you know, you see why: outlets are the one ugly thing no beautiful kitchen can escape. This solves it for a lot less than you would guess. We priced them on the drive home — my wife had one installed within the month, and it is, she says, the best thing in our kitchen.

So if you ever find a mysterious metal circle in a rental counter: press it. Gently. Did you know what it was before the reveal? Be honest in the comments — and share this with the friend who is forever renovating their kitchen.
