Staff Sergeant Daniel Ruiz had been deployed for 22 months. He had missed two Christmases, one birthday, his nephew’s first steps, and approximately 680 mornings of his dog Hank sitting on his feet while he drank coffee. Of all the things he missed — and the list was long, and he thought about it often — Hank was somewhere near the top. Not because the other things mattered less. Because Hank didn’t know why Daniel was gone.
Hank is a four-year-old yellow Labrador. Daniel got him as a puppy the year before his deployment — a decision he’d questioned during the first frantic weeks of puppy-raising and revisited with a particular kind of longing once he shipped out. His wife, Carmen, had taken over Hank’s care with the same steady competence she applied to everything. Hank was walked, fed, loved, and told regularly that his dad was coming home.
Whether Hank understood this is a question for scientists. What Hank clearly did understand, according to Carmen, was that something was missing. He slept on Daniel’s side of the bed. He carried Daniel’s old running shoe — one that Carmen had deliberately not thrown away — from room to room. Every time a car pulled into the driveway, he was at the window before the engine cut out.
For 22 months, it was never the right car.
Daniel’s homecoming was planned carefully and secretly. Carmen knew the date. Hank did not. On a Thursday afternoon in October, Carmen set up her phone on a small tripod in the front hallway — positioned to capture the door — and texted her sister to stand by. Then she let Hank into the backyard and waited for the knock.
Daniel knocked once. Carmen opened the door, stepped aside, and said nothing.
