The Note a Stranger Left Us

We were new parents running on almost no sleep, out for our first real dinner in months. Our baby fussed through half of it, and I spent the whole meal apologizing with my eyes to every table around us, certain we were ruining everyone’s night.

As we were gathering our things, our waiter came by and said a customer who had already left had asked him to give us something. He set a small folded note on the table and, when I looked up to find the person, they were already gone.

I opened it. In simple handwriting it said: “P.S. Your wife and baby are beautiful.” That was it. No name. No number. Just a stranger, on their way out of an ordinary restaurant, taking a moment to lift up two frazzled parents who felt like they were failing.

You have to understand what that season of our lives was like. The baby wasn’t sleeping, which meant we weren’t sleeping. My wife hadn’t had a meal she didn’t eat one-handed in three months. We had almost cancelled that dinner twice, and halfway through the appetizers, as the fussing started and the looks began — or the looks we imagined — we wished we had.

I had spent the whole evening seeing us through other people’s eyes: the loud table, the rookie parents, the ones ruining date night for everyone else. It never once occurred to me that someone in that restaurant might be looking at us and seeing something worth envying — something young and tired and beautiful and brand new.

I have to tell you, I got a little emotional right there at the table. After weeks of feeling stretched thin and invisible, someone we would never meet had noticed us — not the crying, not the mess, but the beauty in it — and thought it was worth writing down.
