I Said No to My Son’s Inheritance Request

My son Kevin has always had big dreams and, I’m sorry to say, a wife who has bigger ones and less patience. Over the years I’ve watched them pour money into a food truck, a vending route, and a ‘can’t-miss’ online shop. All three are gone now.

So when Kevin came to my kitchen table and asked me to simply hand over ‘his’ inheritance now — eighty thousand dollars — to bankroll his wife’s latest idea, I felt my stomach drop.

That eighty thousand is not a luxury to me. It is the money that will pay for my care when I can no longer manage. It is the only thing standing between me and being a burden on these very children.

I told him, as kindly as I could, that I loved him but the answer was no. That I’d be glad to help in small ways, but I would not empty my safety net.

He stood up so fast the chair scraped. ‘You’re choosing money over your own son,’ he said, and he walked out. That was six weeks ago. He hasn’t called since, and neither has half the family.
