He unfolded a page in my mother’s handwriting and began to read.
‘To my family,’ it said. ‘If you are hearing this, then I am gone, and I want no fighting over what I left behind. First, to my daughter, who gave up her own life to care for me: I saw everything. Every night you didn’t sleep. Every time you fed me when I couldn’t feed myself and never once complained.’
‘I know exactly what is in my accounts, down to the dollar, because my daughter kept careful records and showed me every month. She never took a cent for herself — I had to beg her to let me pay for her groceries. If anyone in this room accuses her of stealing, know that they are accusing the only person who was actually here.’
Then came the part that undid me. ‘I have left the house and the larger share to my daughter, not out of favoritism, but as wages long overdue for work the rest of you were unwilling to do. Daniel, Vanessa — you had every chance to show up. Do not now show up only for the money.’
Vanessa turned the color of ash and sat down. Nobody said a word. My mother, even from beyond, had stood between me and the knife. I miss her every single day — and I will never stop being grateful that the woman I cared for to the very end made sure, one last time, that I was cared for too.
