A Little Girl Was Terrified of Her First Glasses. So the Optician Cut Her Lenses Into Stars.

My daughter is six, and when the eye doctor said she needed glasses, she burst into tears in the waiting room. Not because of the exam — because she was certain the kids at school would laugh at her. Nothing I said could talk her out of it.

The optician fitting her frames overheard the whole thing. He knelt down to her level and asked her what her favorite thing in the whole world was. Without hesitating she said, “Stars.”

He smiled and told her he could do something special, but only for very brave girls. Then he cut the edges of her lenses into the shape of little stars — a small, careful bit of craftsmanship he absolutely did not have to do.

When she put them on and looked in the mirror, her whole face changed. The child who had been crying twenty minutes earlier was now turning her head side to side, watching her star glasses catch the light, grinning like she’d been handed a crown.
